I have been a model railroader since the 8th grade. I
always loved to build models, but once I started building working models I could never go
back to static displays. A well built layout with precision cars and wheels brings a
high degree of satisfaction, especially since the end result is so visually
appealing. Trains also appeal to my fascination with all things in the past.
Railroads spark images of the old west, of far away places, and also of sheer magnificence
and power. Being able to create a world from start to finish is a power that brings
its own reward. A model railroad is a totally unique representation of a mountain of
decisions.
These pictures found at the
bottom of this page show an HO scale model railroad I built in 1994. It is based
upon Kansas City Southern as it existed in the early 80s. The location is
Shreveport, Louisiana. A new layout is currently in the planning stages.
First Layout. A 4 x 8 footer built in 1976, this layout contained two
stretched ovals with two sets of cross-overs. Two spurs were on the outside loop,
and a small yard was connected to the inside of the inner loop. This promising
layout was never completed.
Second Layout. A 2 x 7 footer industrial spur built in 1993, modeled the KCS as
it existed in Shreveport, Louisiana. Block control, slow motion switch motors on all
11 turnouts. Pictures of this layout can be found below.
Third Layout. Currently in Planning Stages, but will
probably fit between two corners of my basement wall, a run of about 30 ft. It will
be chest high and no more than 2 ft. deep, except for turn arounds. |
