Historical Fact:  The #1 pop single is "I Can't Go For That" by Daryl Hall and John Oats.  The #1 album is "Freeze Frame" by the J. Geils Band.

Went to school, Gayle Green      got in a fight with some girl. Pretty busy at school all day. Got home, read part of Animal Farm again, and fell asleep. Told mom that I was going to go to the library in a little while, and then mom and dad went to the farm. I got all the LSUS information and brought it over to Laura’s house at 7:30. She had been to basketball practice earlier.  It was a surprise visit, we talked at and watched TV and I left at 8:45.  I wanted to leave earlier and stop by Robert’s house but lost track of time. I got home at 9:00 and Ron was just leaving. My parent’s were not home yet so Ron and I went to Taco bell and ate- then we went to Robert’s house. Got there at 9:42, and we left at 10:00. Robert gave me a map of a proposed vacation this summer. Ron let me drive his car home, and we got home about 10:13, I read some more and mom and dad came home at 10:17 and then I fell asleep

I felt bad for Gayle that day.  And I hate to see girls fight, never a pretty sight.

PHS (BOYS & GIRLS) AT NATCHITOCHES

Went to school, Donny Day acted like a fag. Found out that Marti has "The Catcher In The Rye", and Jeff Mitchel found out that I had "Einstein's Universe". Was rainy all day. After 5th, went in library and did homework, stayed after for Dan Owens band meeting but Doug was sick so we didn’t and he game me a ride home. Joe’s mother took me and Joe to school. After school I took a nap. Grandma said a lady called about a job but I could not get in touch with her. Mom had to work until 9:00 that night so dad went and got a pizza. Ellen Joupi came over and was crying and all full of shit and flapdoodle. Almost ruined my appetite. Called Laura about 7:30 and found out that Laurie wrecked her car in a bad car accident. We talked until 9:00.

I wanted to read Catcher In The Rye because I thoroughly enjoyed all the books that were on our senior list.  It was almost 20 years to the month when I finally did read this book, and considered it one of the worst books I've ever read.  All the author does is complain the entire book- it's one long complaint story.

Ellen was always distressed about one thing or another.  I would eventually come to date her myself many years later.  She had a very bright personality and was usually happy go lucky, but when she was upset she sure didn't hold back the tears.

Wednesday February 3, 1982

Checked in for lunch, 4th, and 5th hours. Gave a Karl Marx report in sociology. Came home and called the lady at the unemployment office back- a job at brookshires? Made up Beaver song on the piano, goofed off. Frank called and wanted to know if we were still going out with Ronnie tomorrow? Later, Paul called and wanted to see a move. I said I would if Frank went. Frank said yes so Paul came over at 7:15 and then we went to Frank’s house and then we three went to Mall St. Vincents to see "Modern Problems". It Started at 7:45 and was a great movie. Came home and called Laura at 9:50, we talked until 11:00 while I ate ravioli. Read electronics, went to bed.

I can still play the Beaver song on the piano, because I never stopped playing it (or any of the other 1,000 songs I've made up over the years).  It has words:

I know a girl, and Beaver is her name
If it weren't for Beaver, it wouldn't be the same

I was her only Pooh
Only Pooh would do

It it weren't this way
I don't know what I'd do

I don't know why they call her Beaver
I guess you would just have to meet her

Beaver Beaver tell me how
Beaver Beaver tell me now

Beaver Beaver can't you see
Beaver Beaver you can tell me

Historical Fact:  Coke launches its latest advertising campaign "Coke is it".

Came to school for lunch, 4th, and 5th. Was called to the office for leaving a mess in the lunch room- thanks to Cherry Vail. Also got to see Mr. Marshal for signing in late to much- thank’s Mrs. Marlow. After 5th house, went back to Mrs. Taylor’s room and copied a book list. After school, messed around, read P-1. Called Laura around 8:00 on grandma's phone- she threw me out and I called Laura back on the red one.  We were in the middle of a fight about whether or no she wanted to go to Holland.  We talked until about 10:30 P.M. and agreed that Laura would come over tomorrow at noon.  Can I make it?  Pu can do anything.  Studied electronics and went to bed.

Sherry Vail was one of Tammy's friends.  I got in trouble at the school cafeteria for using and then leaving behind way to many napkins.  Cherry Vail most likely did this as a joke, and it was a bit embarrasing for me.  But to this day I still take twice as many napkins as I need, everywhere I go.

PHS (BOYS & GIRLS) VS BOSSIER (HOME)

Went to school, left after lunch and meet Laura at my house.  Her mom called about 2:00 and and she left.  I read P-1, messed around- she said she would call me around 6:30, she did not need a ride, she had the beavermobile.  She never did call but came over at 7:20, after I called her house and then Lauries.  Mom and dad went to the farm and were going to spend the night.  Mrs. Lee said to send Beaver (Laura) home if the roads got to bad.  "OK."  The weather outside was freezing rain.  After mom came home from work and before she left, I took Tammy to a basketball game and then went to Thrifty for booze.  Mom and dad went to the farm, and Paul came over at 6:45, then Laura came over.  Laurie was restricted this weekend for wrecking her car.  Frank was out with Marti all night.  We (Me, Paul, and Laura) stayed at my house listening to records (had a good time) and drinking the beer Laura brought over.  Then we took the Beavermobile to Laurie's house (got there about 9:00 P.M.) and drank more beer we bought at Pak-A-Sak while Paul kept drinking the Seagram's V.O.  that I bought.  We stayed at Laurie's house (she was babysitting there) and Laura's mom called once.  Laura had to be home around 11:00 because of the bad weather so at 11:00 she brought me and Paul back to my house.  Me, Paul and Laura all got pretty buzzed.  Paul and I started to go to the square in Paul's car, but his windshield was so iced over we took my mom's car instead.  A bridge on the Clyde Fant Parkway was frozen over and we almost wiped out on it.  We went to Action West, and I played hell with their new mirror, got the fat lady mad at me.  We left about 2:00 A.M. and went back to my house.  Paul went right home and I went right to bed, pretty buzzed.

Also- Ronnie paid me back the money he owed me.  David Polander came over.

Mom and dad had specifically told me to NOT take mom's car out that night (a 1981 Monte Carlo), because of the freezing rain on the roads.  Well I did anyway, and on one of the icy overpasses on the Clyde Fant we were going perfectly straight when a gust of wind hit the car from the side and flipped it around.  We did a perfect 360 with the car rotating perfectly forward again just as we got off the bridge, where the tires caught again.  To my horror I looked to the left and saw another Monte Carlo, same year as my moms, wiped out down at the bottom of the long hill that lead to the frisbie gold course.  It had just happened because they were just getting out of their car.  Obviously they were not lucky enough to do the "perfect" 360.  But it could have been me, and if we had wiped out also we probably would have smashed into their car at the bottom of the hill.  Now normal people would have been shaken enough to count their blessings and go straight home, something I did consider for about 30 seconds.

Saturday February 6, 1982

Laura called at 8:20 A.M., I would pick up Laurie and we would go to Laura's basketball game.  I had a hangover.  Picked up Laurie and got to NOEL church about 9:00.  We were about to go in at 9:20 when we saw her leave.  The other team had forfeited, for being late.  So we went to Laura's house following Laura and we talked awhile.  Laura would be real busy all day so I brought Laurie home about 11:00 or so and then I went over to Robert's house.  Robert's mom said he was at Cook's Collector's Corner so I went there and bumped into Robert.  We went back in and then I parked my car at Southfield Plaza parking lot and Robert and I went to Albertson's and Porters for errands for his mother.  I got aspirin at Albertsons for the hangover headache.  Then we went to my house and ate sloppy joes.  We discussed vacation plans for West Virginia, etc.  Called Tony and then Ron over.  Discussed plans, etc.  Everyone left and Robert took me back to my car at Southfield (near the Kon Tiki).  Went home and goofed off just a little while when Laura called at 6:18 P.M., she would need a ride out.  "OK".  I would pick her up at 7:15.  I took a shower, called Laura again to say I would be late and got there at 7:30.  We went to my house.  My parents were spending the night at the farm again.  Paul gets off work at 9:00 P.M. and would come over after he gets off.   Frank and Marti came over at 9:20.  Laura and I were talking on the couch when Frank and Marti came over and then Paul came over.  We all talked awhile (no beer that night) and then Frank and Marti went home.  Paul stayed until Frank came back and then Frank and Paul went out (about midnight) and Laura and I watched HBO in mom and dad's room.  I took Laura home about 1:15 A.M. and got her home at 1:30, came home and didn't get to bed until 3:00 A.M.

I hated going to Laura's basketball games, I was almost always feeling hung over and tired.  But I did my best to not let her know how I hated going- I wanted to be supportive.

Sunday February 7, 1982

Woke up and Frank came to church with me.  After church, I took a shower and called Laurie.  Paul had already called her- he wanted to go to her farm.  Laurie had to visit her grandfather first, then we would go.  Paul called, he would take a shower and then come down.  Dad went back to the farm after he dropped mom off for church.  Laura called and I picked her up in mom's car and came back to my house after stopping to look at the scenery.  We talked on the couch, mom and Tammy had left for the BX.  We played reverse roles, kidded around, then Frank, Paul, and Daniel came over.  We then went to pick up Laurie and then Laura and then we all went to Laurie's farm in Paul's car.  Paul brought two .22 rifles.  Frank and I went to a junkyard out there and shot bottles.  Had a good time.  Then Paul shot birds and we threw a dead one on his head.  We went to a store and got some munchies.  Came back, messed around, played hide and seek in the farmhouse in total darkness.  I was caught only once.  Bet Laurie about taking the cane pole home (huge).  Frank somehow got it home.  Took Laura, Laurie, Frank, Daniel and me home.  Got home about 9:00 P.M., goofed off and went to bed around 10:15 P.M.  I did argue with Paul some that day.  Was a great day.

I hated it when Paul brought that gun out to Laurie Jeter's farm, because he seemed so damn careless with it.  He never gave a second thought to shooting through shrubs and trees and once I was out of sight talking to Frank and I heard two gunshots and what sounded like two bullets whizzing past my head.  I was pissed.  Most people who own guns will tell you they are responsible and know how to handle them but my experience has shown me that most people who own guns are simply stupid.  The other reason I hated to see him bring his gun is that he seemed to enjoy shooting any living thing he could.  It bothered me then and it still bothers me now.

Monday February 8, 1982

Went to school all day, came home, finished the P-1 book, was reading about the CTC-16 when Ron came by at 5:30.  The Navy recruiter called, I would be there in a little while.  Ron and I took his car and went to the Navy station and then to Robert's house (we had called him before we left, and agreed we would go out later and get a pizza).  Was rainy, rainy, rainy all day.  Me, Robert, and Ron went to Pizza Inn in Shreveport- ate, Ron would eat Buffy.  We stashed pizza from the buffet so they would have to cook more (was an all you can eat) then we went back to Robert's house- we showed vnc his home work, etc, talked and then Ron took me home at 9:00.  Ron is working the 12:00 A.M. - 8:00 A.M. shift these days.  Tried calling Laura at 9:00, no answer.  I would wait for her to call.  I was looking at Navy material when Laura called at 9:35.  We talked until 10:15.  A good conversation, not deep but lively.  She had been at the new course her mom and sister were taking.  Something about being proper and ladylike.  Whatever!  After our phone conversation, I goofed off and went to bed at 10:45.  I wrote Laura a letter that night.

Jim Kelley was the local Navy Recruiter and wanted me in the Navy so bad he couldn't stand it.  Looking back, it seems to me that his high-pressure tactics were over the top and almost downright unethical.  All I wanted to know originally from him is what jobs I would qualify for in the Navy.  I had taken the ASVAB test in high school and had done quite well, qualifying for their Advanced Technical and Advanced Electronic tracks.  But the man was like a dog with a bone, he wouldn't give up.  I tried telling him once that I was having way to much fun with my friends to just go off and join the Navy, and he leaned across his desk and said, "Son, the fun's gotta stop sometime."  Give me a break.  It looked as if he would gladly ruin my life just to get an inch closer to his monthly quota of new recruits.

Ron, Robert, and I hid all the buffet pizza so they would have to make more, since the buffet was about to end.   Buffy was the waitress working that day, Ron was known for saying rude things under his breath, and sometimes even loudly.  But that is the way Ron always was, if he thought of something he was compelled to say it, no matter how crude it was.

PHS BOYS VS AIRLINE (HOME)

Went to school all day.  Mr. Elkins caught me erasing his chalkboard.  He was very confused.  Stayed after for detention, talked to Mrs. Tharp about ACT, SAT, and ASVAB test scores.  Came home.  The new refrigerator came in.  Reviewed all test scores.  Fell asleep. Frank called, we (Paul, Frank, and me) would go see a movie that night.  It was dollar night, and Raiders of the Lost Ark was playing.  I left for Frank's house and met Paul there, we went in Paul's car to the movie.  Got home about 9:20 P.M., talked to mom and tried calling Laura but the phone was busy.  Started to eat a can of Ravioli when Laura called at 9:35.  We talked until 10:45.  A good conversation in general.  She invited me over for tomorrow.  "OK!"  I did call Laura at 3:30 earlier to ask about lost college info. Tammy's birthday is today, she is 15.  She went to the basketball game tonight.  I mailed Laura her letter this morning.

Being the prankster that I was, I had written something funny on his chalkboard but then thought better of it, which was why I was erasing it when he came in.  I think Frank and I had been pulling some pranks on him since Frank didn't like him because he thought that Mr. Elkins had a thing for Marty.  Frank believed that Mr. Elkins felt that Marty should be dating someone more "upstanding".  It's not that we were scum, but we all wore our fathers old green military jackets in the winter time (they were fantastic coats, very warm and durable).

Went to school all day, we supposed to meet the Navy recruiter at 3:30 but I called and said I could not make it.  He said he would pick me up after school tomorrow.  Mom came home, I had already called Laura at 2:20 earlier, said I would be over at 7:15-7:30.  Went to the library, got Fahrenheit 451, got to Laura's house at 7:20 and stayed until 9:15.  Watched TV, picked up Mr. Tharp's senior information.  Finally showed mom my report card.  Came home and ate sloppy joes, read part of 451 and went right to bed.  Paul called while I was at the library.  Laura did not have basketball practice tonight, it was rescheduled for tomorrow.

I can't believe how many sloppy joes I used to eat.  I have them about twice a year now, if that.

Showing my mom my report card was never much fun.  I had started high school making straight As my freshman year (only one B), and by my Senior year I was making Cs or lower.

FRANK NOTES :

I wish I had spent more time with school work, but then we probably wouldn't have had that much fun.  I got a F my last six-weeks in Advanced Math.  I skipped the final exam.  I was at my house, in my room with Marti.  Got an F and still didn't get any.

Man I remember how those "F" made a person feel!  I got plenty myself.  Felt like a dog each time.  I guess getting an F in Advanced Math though is better that getting an F in Regular Math.

So you were busting the moves on Marty in your own bed room?  Where was your mom?  I can see it now:

"Frank....I'm home!"
"MOM!! DON'T OPEN THE DOOR!!!"

(sound of door opening anyway)

"NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!"

Later that night, with dad:

"Son, it's time we had a little sit down talk about the birds and the bees."

Historical Fact:  The average standard mortgage rate in the U.S. is currently 17.49%.

PHS BEAUTY PAGEANT (AT AIRLINE)

Went to school, the Navy recruiter picked me up and we went to my house and filled out the application paperwork.  Ronnie and Ellen dropped over about 5:00 while I was reading.  Read most of the day, played the piano and goofed off.  Tammy went to the beauty pageant and mom and dad went to the bank and then out somewhere.  I called Laura at 8:00, she was not home.  She called at 8:45 and then called me back around 9:00 because Joe had to use the phone.  We talked until 10:45, she had gone (after basketball practice) to eat at Jhonney's Pizza with Joe and Laurie.  She had told Joe about me and the train and the streaking.  A good conversation.  Tammy made the top 50.  Mom and dad got home at 11:00, who knows when Tammy came in.  After Laura's call, I read and then went to bed.

I had a piano in my room.  It was a big ugly green upright that would make a ton of noise if you opened up the top.  Mom and dad got it from a nursing home.  It weighted a ton.

PHS BOYS AT GREEN OAKS (AWAY)
LINCOLN'S BIRTHDAY

After school, Laura woke me up at about 4:40 P.M.- she was calling early because she wanted to be ready early.  She had the Beavermobile tonight- her and Laurie would be over about 6:15 - 6:30.  Laurie couldn't make it because she had to work 1 hour at McDonalds first.  Laura came over about 6:20 or so.  David Polander had come over about 4:50.  Laura brought beer over and Paul gets off at 9:00 P.M.  Frank was out with Marti all night.  Laura and I were going to go get Laurie (she had called, she was off work now and was at home) but waited a little while in the Beaver Mobile for Robert to show up with Layna to pick up the invitation I rustled from Tammy.  We game them 10 min, got Laurie, came back, and Robert and Layna were here.  My parents never did go anywhere that night.  Robert, Layna, me, and Laura, and Laurie were talking in the living room and Robert and Layna left and Paul came over.  Laurie was hungry so me, Laura, Tammy, Paul, and Laurie all went to Johnies Pizza (in the Beavermobile) but it was to crowded so we went to Mr. Gatti's instead.  We ate, then went to my house and sat in the driveway in front of the house.  Paul and Laurie were kidding around, Laura was grouchy and I was too.  After a long, boring wait for Laura and me, I went in about 12:30, Tammy went in, Paul drive home and Laura took Laurie home.  Finished Fahrenheit 451.

We liked eating at Johnies Pizza a lot because we knew some of the kids that worked there and more often than not we were allowed to help ourselves to all the free beer and pizza your stomach could hold.

PHS BEAUTY PAGEANT FINALS (AT AIRLINE)

Woke up, mom and dad went to the Farm, went driving around, took a shower, drank leftover beers.  Frank called.  I called Robert about where someplace was at, etc.  Drank mom's Coors beers.  Tried calling Laura at noon but there was no answer, called again at 12:10 and she was home and had just come back from her basketball game.  I asked her over and she said yes but had to clean her room first.  She finished early and asked me over at 1:20.  Got there about 1:45 (the original time anyway) and her dad was leaving so we stayed there.  We watched TV and got in an argument and then we went to my house and talked.  Tammy was at a Beauty Pageant Banquet.  I took Laura home about 4:15, then I went to the Four Seasons for Valentines Day Card for tomorrow.  Picked up Laura at her house at 7:20, went to my house.  Paul came over and then Laurie called and Paul went to pick her up (she had to work one hour at McDonalds) and Laura and I drank Seagram's 7 and & 7 up.  Paul also picked up Daniel after picking up Laurie.  They all came over and we were in the kitchen drinking 7&7 when Ron stopped over.  Mom and dad came home from the farm and everyone (except Ron) left for St. Vincent's Senior party.  Tammy was at the beauty pageant.  Left my house around 9:10 P.M.  Laura snuck in the Seagram's 7 in, it was a good party.  Saw David Polander there, Bic, Andy Gavin, Charles Mayhone, Robert and Layna, Tony Prather, Skunk, Julie, Teresa, LeeAnne, Christine McIver, Ronald Angus, and others.  The Seagrems got stolen from where we hid it but it was almost gone anyway.  We bumped into Frank and Marti there and they were dressed super punk.  Left about 12:30 (it ended at 1:00 A.M.) and went to my house.  I took Laura home and Laurie home.  Dropped Laura off at her house and she ran right in because she did not feel to well.  Her stomach was hurting her (not from drinking- no one ever really got buzzed).  I went home and went right to bed.

That wasn't the only time in high school that our booze was stolen and promptly drank by other kids.  It's amazing how "unpicky" we all were as a high school lot...."Look!  An abandoned half-empty bottle of booze!  Let's drink it!"

Once Frank and I left a 1/2 of a pint of Jim Bean inside an old abandoned tire in a field before we went into a Parkway Dance.  Scott Larson and his goofy friends had seen us stash it there.  We came out of the dance later and it was gone.  Later that night we bumped into Scott and his friends and they were all trashed, and admitted they drank it.  We didn't really mind because those kids were all right, the "nerds" of school, and they really needed to have a good time and it was probably a once in a blue moon thing for them.  Heck Frank and I were drinking all the time.

When we were freshmen, Ed Martin had scored some booze, and we went to Pak-A-Sak and got Icees and mixed them together, drinking the icee on the way to the dance.  When we got there Ed was crazy enough to strike up a conversation with a policeman who was working the dance that night by patrolling the school grounds.  The policeman smelled the booze on Ed's breath and asked if we had been drinking.  Edward admitted that we had, and the policeman said "No problem, I used to drink before high school dances too."  That was a lesson that has since always worked very well for me- never bullshit an police officer, if they think you're lying to them you're screwed.  I've had great lucking getting away with a lot of things by always shooting straight with them.

Sunday February 14, 1982

Went to church, bumped into Frank there.  Got home and Laura called- she wanted to know if we all wanted to go to Laurie's farm.. Mom and dad went to the Farm.  Tammy had no CCD.  Called Frank and Paul- they wanted to go.  I called Laura back and told her the itinerary.  I took a shower, picked up Laura (gave her a valentines day card and Snoopy) and then picked up Laurie and we went back to my house.  Paul showed up at 1:45 with Frank.  I had called Robert earlier- he and Layna might come out to Jeter's farm today also.  So Paul, me, Frank, Laura, and Laurie all took my mom's car to Laurie's farm.  We all went walking around behind the house and I wanted to race Frank across the big bare cotton field but Laura or Laurie would not make it worth our while.  We were talking and building up a fire for the hot dogs Laura had brought and looking at the Playboys there when Robert and Layna showed up.  We all talked a while and then Robert and Layna left after staying an hour and a half (Layna had to go to do house chores).   Barrie made the top 15 in a Beauty Pageant last night!

Frank and I went to get more soda pop and chips and came back for a distasteful joke.  We all got in a fight but it did not last to long.  We cooked our hot dogs and then played hide and seek in the dark with the sun glasses.  We left at 8:00 and I took Laura, Laurie, and Frank home and then Paul to his car at my house.  Ron was there.  Paul left and I went and played the piano, and goofed off.  I had gotten home at 8:40 and mom and dad were only 5 minutes behind me.   Ron left and I talked to Laura at 9:20, we did not talk long- got the big CLICK, and Laura called me back at 9:40.

Playing hide and seek in the dark in that old Farmhouse was a blast.  It was pitch black and you had to carefully shuffle around the house, reaching out in the dark trying to find someone.  It was a hell of a jolt when you grabbed something and it moved!

WASHINGTON'S BIRTHDAY (OBSERVED)

Went to school all day, was supposed to stay for detention but did not.  After school, read, fell asleep.  Mom and Tammy went to a part at LSUMC.  Dad went to the Toloso's.  The Navy recruiter called- I was supposed to meet him at 6:00, but I forgot.  Will see him after 5:00 tomorrow.  I was cleaning my room when Ron came over. He stayed for awhile and left.  I cleaned my room, watched a few minutes of The Jerk on TV when Laura called at 9:38, she had been to her new class that taught her how to eat and exercise this time.  I guess she went to basketball practice earlier also.  Mom and Tammy came home and at 9:50 I asked Laura to call me back at 10:00.  OK, and she did and we talked until about 10:17.  I did my homework and went to bed.

BAND BOOSTERS MEETING 7:30

Six month anniversary for Laura and I.

Went to school, stayed for detention from 2:05 - 4:00.  When home, when mom got home I took her car and went to the base library and checked out two records.  Then went to the Navy recruiter and finished paperwork.  I am supposed to be back up there at 6:00 A.M. Saturday morning to enlist and take the oath after getting the physical.  Damn!  Get me out of here!  After the Navy visit, went to Stan's record shop and finally used Laura's gift certificate.  Came home and went across the street to talk to Rick (the Army Recruiter) about the mess I got in to.  Went home, Ron came over and hung around.  Ron left and I was about to call Laura when she called me at 9:47 and we talked until 10:43.  I ate and read over the Navy materials and then went to bed.

Wednesday February 17, 1982

Went to school, came home, took a nap.  Mom and dad and grandma and Tammy all went to Sears and then out for Pizza.  The Navy Recruiter called, Paul called he wanted to go to a movie but Frank was going to the Senior Skating party with Marti and I had no money so we did not go to a movie.  Rob Horner called about Laurie Jeter's hotel key.  Mom and dad and the gang came home and then Laura called at 9:00, we talked until 10:00.  A very general conversation.  I did my homework and went to bed.

Thursday February 18, 1982

Went to school, came home, Laura called about 4:30, she had basketball practice that night but asked me over for 7:15.  I took a nap, went to Frank's house (rode bike) and borrowed $5.00 to give dad so mom and dad could take the truck to have the income tax done (the truck was out of gas).  Mom and dad left and I went to the Navy office to give them my birth certificate and preferred selections sheet.  Saw Rick and his wife up there at the Army place.  Went to thrifty to get Seagram's 7 and came home and took a shower and then went to Hamels Parking lot to kill a little time.  Got to Laura's house at 7:30, left at 9:20.  We watched TV, talked, etc.  Came home, read and then went to bed.

Historical Fact:  The De Lorean Motor Company goes into receivership.

Checked in for lunch, had stayed home and typed a report that was due 4th hour.  Came home and took a nap.  Ron came over, mom had gone to the commissary.  Ron left, I took mom's car to the bank and got money.  Called Laura, would pick her up at 7:00.  Laurie had to work until 12:00 and Frank and Paul went out so I got to Laura's house at 7:20.  Mom and dad went to the farm and spent the night, Tammy spent the night with Cheri after the Parkway Dance.  Never saw Tammy all night.  So Laura and I got some beer and drove around until mom and dad left and then we went to my house and had a drinking bout with Seagram's 7 and beer.  She told me all about Arizona and Carlsbad caverns and Rob Horner dropped over for the Hotel key.  I saw his new car.  He left and Laura and I talked until she got stomach pains.  They were so bad we went to the base hospital and she got some medicine.  We met her mother up there.  We went back to my house and she took some of her medicine and then I took her home about 12:00.  On the way home, picked up Hector Neives and we drove around Shady Grove a little while and then we went home.

Laura's eyes lit up whenever she talked about Carlsbad Caverns.  To this day I still want to go see what it was all about.  We must have talked for over an hour about the vacation she took there.  I think that we both felt in our hearts we would someday go there together, because neither one of us could see a future without the other.  We had implicitly talked about marriage several times that year.

We never did find out what her stomach pains really were- most likely bad cramps.

Saturday February 20, 1982

Laura called at 8:00 A.M., her game was at 11:00.  Tried to go back to sleep but could not.  Messed around, took a shower, took Tammy and Cheri to mall St. Vincent and got more beer.  Got back at 12:30 and Grandma said that Laura had just called and so I called her back.  They had lost their first game, which was their last.  She said she would take a shower and then I could come get her.  Picked her up at 1:20 we drank beer and went to my house and got more cold beer.  On the way to pick Laura up, I bumped into Jerry Teutch and said hello for a few minutes at Hamels.  Laura and I drove around town, looked at the 1982 model Cameros, and eventually wound up at my house.  We talked awhile and I took her home about 4:00.  She would come over in the Beaver mobile at 6:30.  Laurie had to work all day and night- Paul worked until 9:00, and Frank and Marti spent the day together and they would come over at 9:00 with Paul.  Laura and I talked a lot, then sat out in the carport and talked there for a while.  Her stomach is still hurting her.  Mom and dad came home and went right in.

Laura and I did talk to No Sweat for a few minutes also.  Eventually (about 9:20 P.M.) Paul came over and was very shortly followed by Marti and Frank in the Dragon Wagon.  We all sat in the Beavermobile in my carport.  Laura and I were tired and ready to go in (I had been drinking a lot all day and Laura's stomach still hurt) so Paul and Marti and Frank went to visit Laurie at work at McDonalds.  They all left, then Laura left.  I went in and ate canned soup and went right to bed.  Didn't know it, but the gang came back to my house about 1:30 A.M. and put a drawn picture of a naked me on my window (but I had gone to bed at 10:30).  Slept horribly, woke up twice and drank 40,000 cups of orange juice.

Sunday February 21, 1982

Woke up, went to church (Frank came along) took a shower, mom and dad went to the farm, called Laura at 12:00, she said she had to eat a big family dinner and I could pick her up at 2:00, picked up Tammy from Sunday school, then took her to McVicar's house).  After notecards, we went outside (was sunny and warm out today) and in the backyard and front yard.  Talked, etc.  Went inside for a while and then went cruising around.  Drove around, went and visited Hamels Animals, talked to a man and woman with big horses there, drove around to used car lots looking at cars and went to McDonalds to use the coupon that I got in the mail.  Laura bumped into Chuck there, Laurie just got off of work.  We ate, took Laurie home, went back to my house to get Laura's book, took Laura home, went to Robert's house but he was not there, went home, tried calling Robert again but there was no answer, mom and dad came back from the farm later on that night.  I had gotten in at 8:00 or so.

Chuck was the boyfriend Laura had before me.  I believe they had dated about a year when she was a junior- he was in a rock band, drove a dumpy van, and was a few years older than her.  She never really had anything good to say about him, and I eventually came to realize that her mom was darn glad to see Laura dating someone her own age again when she met me.

4TH 6-WEEKS TEST WEEK
WASHINGTON'S BIRTHDAY (TRADITIONAL)

Went to school all day, did homework most of the day.  The Navy Recruiter called, they had me set up for tomorrow.  Laura called at 9:40, she had just gotten back from her class.  Laurie got fired from McDonalds she said.  Frank dropped over about 9:48, told Laura and I would call her back in a few minutes.  Frank wanted to go out tonight.  "OK"  I would call frank at 10:30 P.M. and let him know for sure.  Called Laura back by 10:00, at 10:08 she had to let me go for a few min. while someone used the phone.  I called Frank at 10:15 and told him yes.  Laura called at 10:18 and we talked until 10:38.  Met Frank outside at 11:00, we were going to go on bikes but we took mom's car instead.  We got beer at Pak-A-Sak (1 six pack of Old Milwaukee) and I had the Seagram's 7.  We went and picked up Paul at 11:30 and drove around to the Texas State Line, peed a the restrooms there, Frank chased me around the car, we drove around, dropped off Paul and then Frank and I went home.  I went in and ate and then went to bed, buzzed.  Got in at 1:30 A.M.  Was really sunny and warm out today.  Laura laid out in the sun today after school.

Can't believe I went out and got wasted on the night before I had to be up at 5:30 A.M. for the Navy physical.

Tuesday February 23, 1982

Woke up at 5:30 for the Navy Recruiter (he picked me up at 6:00 A.M.).  Went and took a physical all day and ate lunch there.  Got home at 12:30 or so- took a bath, called Mrs. Tharp, school, base hospital, etc.  The physical Doctor wants a X-ray of the upper digestion track.  Mom and then dad came home, explained everything to mom, did my homework (AF book report) about most of day.  Called Laura at 8:20 and talked until 9:10.  Told her all about the day.  Called Robert up at 9:20, he was on the phone talking to Layna but we talked about 10 minutes anyway- he would call and maybe come over tomorrow.  His back has been hurting him real bad again.  Finished AF (Diary of Anne Frank) report and went to bed.

The entire process of taking the physical seemed degrading.  You went through most of the day nearly naked in a thin paper gown with paper slippers.  You had to crawl like a duck, stand in naked in circles while a doctor checked you out, pee in bottles (twice!), etc.  About 1/4 of the people going through with this looked like they were avoiding a prison sentence- long hair, grungy appearance.

Wednesday February 24, 1982

Went to school all day, came home, took a nap. Mom and dad went to the farm. Was waiting for Robert to call when Laura called, she invited me over.  I called Robert and apologized (to his mom because he was asleep).  Took a shower and got to Laura's house at 7:16.  Left at 9:12 and mom and dad were already home.  Laura and I watched Altered States on HBO and then went outside because it was warm and to talk.  Came home and ate and went to bed.

Thursday February 25, 1982

Went to school all day, nothing much of interest happened.  Fell asleep after school, watched Nostrodomus HBO special, talked to mom about it, tried calling Laura at 8:00 her mom said she should be home soon.  Tried calling again at 8:35 her father said she still wasn't back yet.  At 9:30 Laura called- her and Laurie had been out in the Beavermobile and drinking Michelob.  Laura had plenty- I could tell over the phone.  Talked about an hour, one of the best phone conversations ever in my life.  Started out perverted but was great.  After talking, went right to bed.

ENDS 4TH 6-WEEKS

Went to school, tried calling Laura at 2:30 her mom said she was gone but would have her call me back when she got home.  Laura finally called at 5:30, had been stuck with Doris all day (Drives a piece of junk).  Joe had the Beavermobile so I would pick Laura and then Laurie up at 7:30 and 7:45.  Mom and dad went somewhere but did not stay gone long.  Picked up Laura and went to Laurie's house and then we all went to my house into the kitchen.  Paul got off at 9:00 P.M. and Frank and Daniel would come over at 8:00.  I had already picked up one six pack of Mich. before picking Laura up.  So me, Laura, and Laurie sat in the kitchen and talked and then Laurie ran and got the Pu bear and threatened to take me to court over him.  Finally Frank and Daniel came over and helped me and Laura with the beer.  By then mom and dad had come home and mom made a fuss over Frank's arm.  When Paul came over we all piled into his car, got more beer, went to the train bridge downtown and crawled into the tower up there.  Real pretty.

Then we went to McDonalds and Paul threw a shit fit and nearly ruined our last Michelob.  Went driving around just a little while longer, Paul dropped Laurie off then Laura and me off at my house.  Laura and I stayed and talked a little while and then I took Laura home.  She got home at exactly 1:00 A.M.  I went home and went to bed.

Saturday February 27, 1982

Woke up, called Laura at 10:25 A.M.- her first game was at 11:30.  I could not make it because mom took the car shopping for a little while.  Dad had to go to work that morning but they would go to the farm later.  I called Robert and said I would stop by about 1:00 after I went to the base library.  I took mom's car to the library, Robert's house, called home- mom and dad had gone to the farm and Laura had just called.  From Robert's house I called Laura- they had won their first game the next one is at 2:30 but she told me 2:00 so that I would be on time.  Told her to call Laurie and that I would pick up Jeter in time to go see her basketball game at Broadmore Presbyterian Church.  Asked Robert if he wanted to go and he said yes.  His mom have him a list of things to pick up and we went to pick up Laurie and then went to the basketball game.  We were early thanks to Laura fibbing and so we left to get Robert's groceries at Albertson's and came right back.  Robert and I should have watched the game more attentively because it later made Laura mad.  After the basketball game (Laura's team lost by just a little- she played excellently) Laura took Laurie home.  Robert and I went to Robert's house and dropped the perishable groceries off and went to the KCS train yards.  Came back, dropped Robert off, went home, called Laura at 6:00 and boy was she mad.  Got everything straightened out and Joe needed the Beavermobile again tonight so I would have to pick up Laura at 7:00- no later than 7:10 P.M. and then pick Laurie up.  Goofed off for 45 min and then went and picked up Laura.  No one was home except her and she was not ready yet so I waited in her room and looked at her record collection.  She got a Pu-ish letter from Lamar (a copy of the letter is between pages 113 and 114) then we picked up Laurie (she got a letter to but would not admit it) then we went to my house.  Mom and dad called from the farm while I was out- they would be back at 11:00 or so.  So Laura and I and Laurie listed top records in the living room (Tammy was out somewhere) and found out that Paul had come over at 7:30 (he had gotten off at 6:00 and called me- he could be over at 7:30).  Me and Laura and Laurie had gotten to my house at 7:32, we just missed him.  We waited and waited and I showed Laura and Laurie pictures and then I called Frank's house.  Paul and Frank were playing chess.....I told them that when they come over to stop and get lots of beer and cigarettes for Laurie because we would play Col. Puff at my house.  Paul and Daniel came over (Frank was out with Marti) finally and they forgot the damn beer!  So Laura and I took mom's car and went to Pak-a-Sak and got 2 six packs of Michelob  and 2 six packs of Old Milwaukee.  Came back and played col. puff and then Frank came over (not with Marti- she was tired from a previous trip with her father in Texas) and he played Col. Puff too.  We changed the name to Ezra Brooks.  As usual, Daniel got wasted.  Mom and dad came home and we all cleaned everything up and took Frank's station wagon to the train bridge again.  I loaned Laura a jacket and we went up there to the tower again.  It was not as cold as it was last night.  We stayed up there and then we went and played hide and go seek at the Bicentennial Theater until 1:30 A.M. (had a blast!).  Frank went to my house.  Frank took himself and Daniel home, Paul took his car home, and I dropped Laurie then Laura off at their houses.  Laura went right in because it was kind of late and we were both tired but it was a great night.  Dropped Laura off, went home and scrounged up money, got gas at pack-a-sak, made 4 eggs and went to bed.

The Lamar Watts Letter:

Dear Laura, how are you doing?  I'm just fine thank you.  Sorry about this handwriting but I'm doing my very best.  I still would like to meet your mother and maybe you could meet mine.

Usually my mother writes all of my letters because I don't write very well.  I hope you can read this.  My bicycle got stolen yesterday so I have to get a new one.  I need a new one anyway.  I call you but you never home.  I wish you would call me.  I would really like that you're so pretty I really wish you would.

I want our mothers and us to go out and eat sometime at Stark's maybe.  I'll pay for yours.  I wish my mother would get better.  She is sick so I am writing this I hope she feels better soon.  What church do you go to?  I wrote a poem about you I do not think you might think it is silly, I hope not:

You're so pretty and nice
I would take you out even twice

I would if you let me
give me a chance and see

You're eyes are so blue
I really, really love you

I hope you like my poem.  It is about you.  If you like it I can write more and I write pretty good poetry don't I.  I read it to my mother and she like it.  I won't bother you anymore just call me sometime please do.

Lamar Watts.

P.S.  I had to look your address up in the phone book and I hope I got the zip code right.

Lamar Watts was a mildly retarted fellow in his early 30s who rode a bike around town that always had two flat tires and a basket in the front.  Laura had made the mistake of telling me she met him at her church and that she thought he liked her.  So I made up the letter above and wrote it using my left hand as sloppy as I could.  She fell for it.  I actually wrote several Lamar Watts letters to her and kept the joke going for quite a while.  The last letters almost crossed the line- I would write something perverted and then erase it but not so completely that you couldn't tell what was first written.  That worked great because Laura called me all excited, saying "You wouldn't believe what he wrote and crossed out, but you can still read it!"

Sunday February 28, 1982

Frank came to church with us, came home and took a shower and mom and dad went to the farm, I picked up Tammy from Sunday school.  Laura called at 12:00 like she said she would, she had to work on her rough draft of her research paper but would call me later on.  I promised her I'd be home.  Then I picked up Tammy from Sunday school and then went to the Base Library.  Frank and Marti found me there.  Went home, Laurie called and t Paul and then Laura called.  Laura finished her rough draft (or her mom did) and Paul was bored and so was Laurie.  So we would go to Laurie Jeter's farm today.  I picked up Laura at 2:45 and went to my house.  Paul came over at 3:15 and me and Laura and Paul went and picked up Laurie at 3:30 and then we went to her farm.  Her aunt was there and we waited about 15 min until she left.  We talked , went to the store once and got soda pop.  Paul brought his rifle.  We all watched TV, wrestled, and went home about 7:15.  Paul dropped Laura off and then Laurie and then me all at our houses.  I was just in time to watch The Spy Who Loved Me James Bond movie which started at 8:00.

Mom and dad came home about 8:40 and went to bed, Frank called during a commercial at about 9:30- he wanted to go out tonight.  After the movie, snuck the car out at 11:00 and met Frank- he had called Paul but Paul had to work tomorrow.  We got beer at Pak-a-Sak and then went by Hamels, McDonalds (closed), Pak-a-Sak for munchies, Jeter's Farm for the hell of it, Jhoniees Pizza, and then home.   Dropped Frank off, came home and went to bed.
